The only thing comparable to the joy experienced during early pregnancy is the apprehension that accompanies it. Most couples would want the reassurance that their pregnancy is progressing well.

The apprehension is further compounded by any bleeding or pain. We offer Early Pregnancy Scan done by consultants. This scan is also called viability scan or dating scan. It can be done from six weeks onwards, helps to visualise the heartbeat to provide reassurance and can also help to find the cause of bleeding or pain.

Who is it for?

The scan will be offered from six weeks onwards. However, earlier scans can be done if there are any symptoms in the form of bleeding or pain.

What does it involve?

An abdominal scan (scan through tummy) is usually sufficient to see pregnancy clearly from seven weeks onwards. However, if the picture is not clear, an internal scan or vaginal scan will be offered. You will be required to attend with a full bladder for an abdominal scan and will be asked to empty bladder afterwards for an internal scan.

The scan appointment also includes discussion of results by specialists at the same time. If the pregnancy was too early to ensure viability, a repeat scan will usually be required, to be performed 7 to 14 days after the initial scan. This is charged as a separate scan. If the pregnancy shows any abnormality, findings will be discussed and further management plan will be formulated.

Blood Tests

The facilities for pregnancy hormone level also called βhcg are available. This test can help to correlate scan findings especially when the scan does not show viable pregnancy inside the uterus.

This new non-invasive prenatal testing is now available to test for Down’s syndrome (trisomy 21). Other rare chromosomal conditions Edward’s syndrome (trisomy 18) and Patau syndrome (trisomy 13) can also be tested This involves testing mum’s blood to check chromosomal abnormalities in foetal DNA which circulates in mum’s blood during pregnancy.. This test is more accurate than other screening tests and can be done from as early as 9 weeks.

The result will be available within 7-10 working days. We offer specialist counselling by consultants before and after the test to help you understand the test, the results and its implications for your pregnancy. We also support throughout the process.
