Frequently asked questions about pregnancy scans and non-invasive screening tests

An early pregnancy ultrasound is typically carried out soon after confirming a pregnancy, usually between 6 and 10 weeks after conception. Its main goals are to confirm the presence of a pregnancy, assess its viability, and accurately determine how far along you are. This type of scan is often referred to as a ‘dating’ or ‘viability’ scan.

If you experience symptoms such as bleeding or abdominal pain in early pregnancy, an ultrasound is recommended to ensure everything is progressing normally. Likewise, if you’ve experienced a previous miscarriage, early imaging can provide clarity and peace of mind.

Our experienced team is dedicated to offering the reassurance and expert care you deserve throughout the early stages of your pregnancy.

Your scan will be conducted by a consultant obstetrician, ensuring a thorough evaluation of both your pregnancy and your baby’s development. The appointment will begin with a discussion about your medical background, any current symptoms, and what you hope to learn from the scan.

You’ll be informed about the procedure itself, including what it involves and how to prepare. During the scan, the consultant will use ultrasound imaging to assess your baby’s early development, take key measurements, and check for any potential issues. You’ll be able to view live images and receive a detailed explanation of the findings.

Preparation requirements vary based on the type of scan. For early scans such as viability or nuchal translucency assessments, you may be asked to arrive with a full bladder to help improve image clarity. For scans beyond 12 weeks, this is typically not necessary. There are no restrictions on eating or drinking before your appointment.

Viability scans are designed for pregnancies between 6 and 10 weeks. This gestational age is usually calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), not from the date of ovulation.

For those who conceived through IVF, the scan timing will be based on the embryo transfer date.

If you’re unsure whether you’re at the right stage for a viability scan, feel free to contact our team—we’re here to help answer your questions and offer guidance.

Yes, during an early pregnancy ultrasound, it is often possible to detect and measure your baby’s heartbeat. Our consultants take great care in examining your baby’s development and will provide precise heart rate readings when visible.

These assessments require a high level of expertise to ensure accuracy and reliability, and our team is committed to offering thorough monitoring and clear communication throughout your visit.

Ultrasound imaging is considered safe for both the mother and the developing baby when performed by a trained professional. Unlike imaging methods that involve radiation, such as X-rays, ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images—making it a non-invasive and low-risk option.

Ultrasound technology has been widely used in prenatal care for over 30 years, with no known harmful effects reported in medical research.
