Changes in cervical cancer screening that could affect you

cervical cancer screening

If you’re someone who keeps track of your smear test reminders, you may be surprised to hear that the cervical screening programme in England is changing. For women aged 25 to 49, invitations will now arrive every five years instead of every three.

Here’s what you need to know about what’s changing, why it’s happening, and when it’s still important to get things checked between screenings.

More accurate HPV testing

Until recently, smear tests (also known as cervical screenings) were primarily used to detect abnormal cell changes in the cervix that could lead to cancer. Now, the screening process begins by testing for high-risk HPV (human papillomavirus), the virus that causes nearly all cases of cervical cancer.

This shift to primary HPV testing means the test is more sensitive and accurate than ever before. If no high-risk HPV is found, the risk of developing cervical cancer in the next five years is extremely low. This follows years of research showing HPV testing is more accurate at predicting who is at risk of developing cervical cancer than the previous testing method. That’s why the screening interval is being extended from three to five years for women aged 25–49.

If HPV is found during screening, the test will still check for abnormal cells and further monitoring or treatment will be offered if needed.

When you should still get checked

While five years between screenings may now be standard, it’s important to know that it is primarily for people without symptoms, so if you notice anything unusual, or would like reassurance, you don’t need to wait for a screening invite.

Some symptoms can be early signs of cervical changes or other gynaecological issues and should always be checked, no matter where you are in your screening cycle. These include:

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding (after sex, between periods, or after menopause)
  • Persistent vaginal discharge that’s new or different
  • Pain or discomfort during sex
  • Ongoing pelvic, lower back, or abdominal pain

These symptoms don’t automatically mean something serious is going on, but they do deserve attention. If you’re experiencing anything on that list, trust your instincts and book in for a check-up.

At SureScan, we offer a range of diagnostic services, including pelvic ultrasound scans and gynaecological assessments, to help get to the root of the problem quickly and clearly.
